The word Kamui indicates one of the basic concepts of the religion of the Ainu people, the natives of the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands, as well as part of the Kamchatka coast.

In their belief, everything in the natural world is populated by divinities or spirits, who are only passing through the earthly world, called Kamui. The world for the Ainu is a balance between the earthly and the otherworldly, which all men must respect and not disturb or transform in any way. Among the most important Kamui, Kimun Kamui, or the god of the mountains embodied in the great brown bear.
